ways to use your sketchbook
Hey readers!
Since this post has stumbled upon your feed, I'm guessing I'm not the only one who was quite a few empty sketchbooks. In this post, I'll be telling you a few ways how I use my sketchbook.
1. Explore
I was a while ago on a quest to find my art style. Frankly, I still am. But now I feel like I have a basic idea of what I want it to look and feel like. What helped me get to this stage was experimenting wildly in a sketchbook of mine. I didn't care whether it looked perfect or not, I just drew aimlessly about anything and everything that came to mind. I was determined to fill every single page to the point where there is not a millimeter of space remaining. Even now whenever I'm not feeling inspired, I look back at that sketchbook and feel a lot better.
2. Studies
This again is very helpful in finding your art style or just improving your art in general. Carrying out studies of subjects, mainly the ones you aren't confident with is extremely helpful. I mainly did human anatomy studies but you can choose whichever area you feel like you need to improve upon.
3. 30-second sketches
This again is a form of study, but instead of studying the subject in detail, you basically try to draw it as fast as you can. These are effective and in a way therapeutic. If you are going to dedicate a sketchbook to only 30-second sketches, I would say use a cheaper one, as you will only be using a pencil as the medium.
4. Finished pieces
This is probably the most common use of sketchbooks and it is a lot of work. In such sketchbooks, there is always a notion that every single page should be absolutely perfect, but it's never like that. Always remember that the sketchbook is for your eyes only and it's a no-judgment zone. If you mess up, it's okay, just move on to the next page and learn from your previous mistake. I normally don't use sketchbooks for such a purpose, but it seems like a nice idea to have all of your artwork in one book.
5. Art journaling
This is probably the most expressive way to use your sketchbook. For more information on art journaling, refer to my previous post.
That's all I have for you guys. Hopefully, you found something that caught your eye! Your sketchbook is just a place where you can experiment and implement all the possibilities of art. Just create.
Stay tuned for more!
